Is there an age limit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda?

Both Rwanda and Uganda have an age limit for gorilla trekking. The minimum age at which a tourist is allowed to go trekking in these countries is 15 years. This is stiffly enforced by the park authorities for reasons of protection and safety, for the visitors as well as the gorillas.

Reasons behind the Setting of an Age Limit

The activity is considered to be very physically demanding since one has to hike through dense forests, steep, and slippery at any time grounds, while taking between two to maximum of eight hours trekking in search of the gorillas. The pre-teen children may find the trek quite challenging.

Small children may fail to keep the attitude of calm and quiet position in front of the gorillas. That is, any abrupt movement, noise, or inappropriate ways of dealing may disturb the gorillas and place both the trekkers and the animals in hazardous conditions.

The gorillas are extremely vulnerable to some of the human diseases, which include common colds. Younger children are more prone to infections; these may be passed to the gorillas unconsciously, thus being a health hazard to the endangered animals.

Other Activities Suitable for Families with Younger Children

For families whose children are below the age of 15 years, there are still many other things to do in both Rwanda and Uganda. This will include:

Nature Walks and Bird Watching: Guided nature walks and bird-watching tours are soft adventure activities for experiencing the parks’ biodiversity, not unduly physically demanding hence recommended for younger children.

Community and Cultural Visits: The cultural tours of the local communities are great, enlightening, and enriching experiences for any family, wherein one learns about the traditions and way of life of people living near these parks.

Safari for Game Viewing: From classic game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda to Akagera National Park in Rwanda, families can view numerous and various types of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and antelopes.

This meets the required minimum age limit and allows for a safe and respectful trekking experience for all concerned, thus supporting the conservation efforts for these magnificent creatures.
