Tips for a Successful Gorilla Safari in Uganda.
The uplifting gorilla safari in Uganda is one of those few real-life experiences that leave you overwhelmed, having come face to face with one of the most impressive yet endangered species in the world: the mountain gorilla.
The dense forests of either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park mean you have to be prepared, patient, and adventuresome to trek them. To enhance your gorilla safari in the best possible way, here are some tips for a successful trek.
1. Book Your Gorilla Permit Early
As there are a limited number available, and they are in such demand, it’s necessary to book early. You will ideally want to make your reservation 3 to 6 months prior to the date of your intended safari. Only a limited number of permits are made available each day in order not to distress the gorillas with too many visitors.
The permit gives you an opportunity to be with one gorilla family for an hour, and it’s one of the most costly permits; thus, a great share of your safari budget will come from it. In Uganda, the permits are issued by UWA, and this earlier issuance of a permit makes sure that a permit is held for you.
2. Physically Prepare for the Trek
Gorilla trekking can be very demanding at times, taking several hours by hiking in thick forests with steep slopes and uneven grounds. You should be in an impeccable physical state, which can let you handle all the challenges of the trek.
Regular hiking, walking, and climbing of stairs will help you build up stamina and strength. Being physically prepared does not only make your trekking experience great but also ensures that you’re capable of fully enjoying your time with the gorillas without feeling overly tired.
3. Dress Appropriately for the Jungle
What you wear will make a huge difference in comfort and safety during the trek. Choose lightweight, quick-drying clothes that cover arms and legs to help protect against insect bites and scratches from thorny vegetation.
Waterproof hiking boots with good traction are a must for slippery, muddy paths. Bring rain gear with you-a waterproof jacket or poncho-because rain can occur without warning in the rainforest, even in the dry season. Also not to be forgotten for comfort are a hat, gloves, and good hiking socks.
4. Pack Smartly for the Trek
Make sure to pack lightly yet with all essentials for your trek: enough amounts of water, snacks high in energy, sunscreen, insect repellant, and a very good quality camera with extra batteries and memory cards to capture your gorilla encounters.
A small backpack is handy in order to carry your gear in, and walking sticks-if provided by the park rangers-help with balance and support on steep terrain. Also, hiring a porter is always recommended besides being a form of support for the local community; it does make your trek somewhat easier as someone will carry your pack.
5. Respect the Gorillas and Follow the Rules
Safety and conservation of the gorillas are the top priorities during your trek. Follow all guidelines provided by your guides and rangers, including keeping a minimum of 7 meters-approximately 23 feet-from the gorillas.
Avoid direct eye contact, as this may be perceived as a threat. Speak softly, avoid sudden movements, and never attempt to touch the gorillas-even if they come close. If you are not feeling well, be open to missing the trek for that day, as gorillas may sometimes be susceptible to human sickness.
6. Be Patient and Flexible
The trip of trekking among the mountain gorillas is not an exact science. It calls for patience and flexibility. The time taken to trek the gorillas can vary from under an hour to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family you will be tracking.
It can even be a very exhausting experience besides the fact that weather conditions could change within the twinkling of an eye. But then, when one does get to see these grand creatures in their natural setting, everything becomes well worth the struggle. A positive frame of mind is all one needs to make the experience really enjoyable. Enjoy every minute of the tour.
7. Engage an Experienced Guide
Having a knowledgeable guide makes all the difference in your gorilla trekking experience. The guides will not only lead you to the gorillas but also give insight into the forest, the behavior of gorillas, and conservation practices for the two species.
They are very important in your safety and ensuring that the rules of trekking are well observed. Trust their expertise and pay more attention to the details of what they say to make the trek safe and enjoyable.
8. Seize the Moment with Respect
Of all the activities on the trek, photographing the gorillas is one, but it must be done respectfully. Switch the flash off on your camera to avoid startling the gorillas. Take your time and enjoy the view before reaching for your camera.
Often, the best pictures are those one capture when simply being there and allowing the gorillas to show up in their natural behaviors. Remember, you will be with them for only one hour, so strike a balance between taking photos and just enjoying the experience.
9. Stay Hydrated and Energized
A walk may get a little long and physically demanding; it is, therefore essential to keep one’s self-hydrated. Take as much water as possible with energy snacks such as nuts, fruits, or energy bars that can help keep your stamina throughout the walk. Hydration is crucial especially in the humid and warm conditions of the forest.
10. Conserve
Go on a gorilla safari and help to protect such vulnerable creatures. Your permit and safari fees are meant to protect these gorillas, their habitat, and also contribute to the financing of local communities. Respect the environment when you visit, and consider contributing to a local conservation project or community project.
A gorilla safari in Uganda is not an adventure; it’s connecting with nature in one of the most profound ways one can ever imagine.
With good preparation, respect toward the gorillas and their environment, and embracing the fullness of the experience, you will have a successful safari that will further the cause of protection for these amazing animals for generations to come.
Whether one is trekking through the misty hills of Bwindi or through the bamboo forests of Mgahinga, these are sights of Ugandan mountain gorillas that will forever remain in memory.
